Teacher Salary - Why We Should Complain
Filed Under Musical Games | Comments Off
Tania Mesar asked:
As teachers we have Christmas Vacation, Spring break and two months off in the sumer, benefits and a pension plan that makes people want to get into teaching, even if they **** children. So why do we complain about our teacher salary?
The teacher salary is a set grid that increases incrementally from one year to the next. A teacher reaches their top salary level after being in the profession for approximately ten years. This amount is more than double what a new teacher makes in the same profession.
A new teacher gets paid less then half the salary as someone who has hit their top pay. The issue is that new teachers often do much more work making lesson plans, coaching and running clubs than the majority of older teachers. Also, what is the incentive, other than the love of children, to improve our teaching practice from one year to the next if we are paid the same amount?
This is why you often see many older teachers that continue to use the same lesson plans they had when they started their teaching practice. In human nature it is common to chose the path of least resistance, so many teachers no not revamp their lessons to make them better, when they already have a stash of old handouts in their files. Their teacher salary will be the same whether they are creating new and innovative lesson plans that engage their students, or if they use dated materials.
Another problem with having a teacher salary solely based on pay grid is that once teachers reach the top of their salary level, they tend to cling to their teaching jobs until retirement so they can access their teacher pension. When teachers wait for their retirement date, it often leaves them bitter and jaded about their teaching day, rather than enjoying the process.
When you have an environment where people are given the tools to grow and work at their best, 10 people can work as if they were a team of 15 or 20, so there should be incentives in the teacher salary to encourage teachers to put forward their best practice so we can improve the overall effectiveness of our schools.
If the teacher salary was not solely based on the pay grid, rather they were rewarded upon performance, teachers could gain a grater feeling of empowerment from doing their jobs, which could translate into more effective teaching.
It is so important as a teacher to build a second stream of income so that we do not stay in the teaching profession because making money in other ways is out of our comfort zone. Let’s learn these skills, so we can get ahead. This will not be helpful to the teacher of to their students. With so many opportunities online to make money, additional to our salary, using the skills we have as teachers, there is no reason for us to stay in our teaching jobs if we don’t absolutely love it.
